november pictures

from november 9th to the 25th...

pregnancy woke me up before the sunrise for quite a while.  plus side? you get to see the sunrise!

oatmeal with milk and berries... mmmm

brady's selfies at church.

coming home from church and trying to figure out how convincing i was trying to not look pregnant.

when i was 10.5 weeks pregnant.  the waist on the skirt actually worked really well as a corset for me.

it normally fits a little looser.

but the wiggle room is long gone.

while i was bedridden with morning sickness... abigail managed to find her fair share of mischief every morning after she woke up.  i'm really not sure what happened here other than a good amount of bubblegum princess toothpaste.

also, brady went through a phase of taking off his pj's.  i didn't fight it.

in november... it snowed.

honey and the kids watched some hockey.

except that brady can't be contained for long.

i still blame pregnancy, but abigail spent a lot of time doing puzzles.

and while i was at ward choir, she singlehandedly opened this brand new puzzle and did it 100% by herself.  all 50 pieces.

liza announced her pregnancy with her littlest wearing a big brothers rock t shirt.  we scribbled on a paper and texted this back.  yeay for homestar runner brady!

my friend kerra and i carpool to choir.  she made these cookies for the choir treat and i ate at least three because they were so delicious.  she texted me the recipe.  i've been thinking about them ever since but still need to actually make them!

11.17.14 at 11.5 weeks pregnant.  my belly popped at 8 weeks and i spent the next month marveling at how fast it grew!

there's little baby hillier!  due date is actually june 4th, not the second like the picture says.

morning sickness left me incapacitated and abigail and brady got to be 100% solid on getting set up at the table.  brady climbed in his chair and then held still while abigail buttoned his bib and snapped his tray and pushed his chair to the table.

then she would sit herself in her own seat so all i had to do was set some cereal on the table and crawl back in bed.  for the record, she was also really good at undoing his bib and helping him out of his chair after his food was all gone so i didn't have to get out of bed for that part.

occasionally though i ventured out of my bed and into abigail's bed!  morning sickness is a beast.  also, kids are totally worth it.

abigail made a pilgrim hat at preschool.  she actually made several and i think i ate most of them.

in november... snow melted.

i normally like blackberries, but this pregnancy i've been liking them even more.  here are some drizzled with sweetened condensed milk.  you should try it.

on our girls night temple trip, i was loving my life because it's always wonderful.  i was still loving my life when i came home because of this.  honey cleaned the entire [filthy] kitchen and all the dirty dishes.

i shopped for clothes for liza for her christmas present.  convenient that we're the same size and the same amount pregnant (she's due just a few days after i am) so that was amazing.

so sleepy.  we went to a friend's house for dinner and at the end, abigail begged us to go home so she could go to sleep.

she passed out the second we were in the car.

i love these two.  they're a winning combo for sure.

we're like a magnet for free stuff.  my neighbor cleaned out her daughter's closet and said we should have all of these basically brand new bags.  abigail was thrilled.  ; )
so that was the odds and ends of november.

after church pictures

from sunday, november 9th.

sometimes my kids are so precious, i just can't help but try to get a decent picture of them that actually showcases their preciousness.  it normally doesn't take long for me to remember why those pictures are so few and far between...

umm, this was the best we got.

picture time over

brady and abigail.... umm, playing football?

or duck duck goose?

or dress up?

and here we have just one kid.  one precious cross dressing little boy.  ; )

at 10.5 weeks pregnant
i hope you thoroughly enjoyed this bunch of dimly lit, grainy, iphone photos... stay tuned for next time!

Old navy deals

We found out on Monday that we're having a girl so naturally, I wanted to do a bit of shopping. I didn't do anything of the sort when I was pregnant with Abigail because Chris was in school and I barely even spent money on food and necessities. But this time is different. ; ) Still, I knew I already had enough to clothe my new daughter... But when Jodi told me there were a bunch of deals at old navy, I couldn't resist. So Tuesday, I dropped Abigail off at school and Brady and I headed to old navy. I really tried to limit myself to just the really good deals... Otherwise I'd be buying a whole new wardrobe for this little girl and spending a lot of unnecessary money. Anyways, here what I picked up for her.

Shirt for $2 and shorts for $.97

Shoes for $.47 and shirt for $.97 - umm, that shirt was originally $17... Do people really pay that?!

Sun hats in different sizes/styles/colors.
$.47 for newborn eyelet one and $.97 for the two wide brim hats.

Shoes $3.50

And then I found a few good deals for Abigail like these sandals for $.97

And this sweat shirt for $1.47

I also got another tunic style shirt for Abigail for $3.50 and a "I love my papa" shirt for Brady for $2.50 even though it is size 4T and made me tear up at the thought that papa might not even be around when Brady grows into it. I decided that didn't matter because Brady will always love papa regardless.

And even though I didn't buy it, for $.97, here's the tiny 0-3 month summer cardigan that Jodi picked up a few months ago when I told her I was pregnant and that I suspected it was a girl. I was pretty confident in my assumption and I'm glad I was right, because this is going to be perfect and adorable this summer.

Old navy is definitely my go to store when it comes to kid clothes. I'm kind of obsessed.

the costa rica post

*pictures will be added soon*

Let's see how far I can get in blogging Costa Rica.

We left on a midnight red eye flight from Denver to San Jose on the night of Monday the 22nd. The kids did even better than I anticipated. It was Brady's first flight as a real person (he got his own seat) so he got to sit in his car seat instead of my lap which was awesome because he slept the whole way except for waking up a few times to sleep cry for a few minutes before falling back asleep. Abigail, that snoozy girl, happily fell asleep instantly and gave us no problems the whole flight (six hours, one hour time change so we arrived at 7am). It was as great as I could have hoped for.

We waited forever at the airport to get the rental car situation figured out (that's a whole other huge story) but it was great because the kids were so happy to play with the uncles (mark, John, Nate) and it was adorable seeing Brady learn/try playing soccer with them.

Eventually, the drivers Brent, Brian, and Chris) showed up with our rental cars. We got a tiny little Suzuki jimmy and the other whole cars were normal SUVs with power windows and clickers and four doors and stuff like that. Ours had two doors, barely enough room in the backseat for two car seats (I had to forward face Brady due to space restrictions and we still didn't have an inch to spare), roll down windows, no clicker, and not even a mirror when you pulled down the sun visor. It's been a long time since I've ridden in a car without power locks or windows but I'll have you know that I'm pretty much an expert at it now. I'm not an expert at the two doors thing though. That made strong kids in and out of car seats even that much more of a pain. But... It was a fun adventure, provided a lot of laughs (Chris had to put it in first gear for us to make it up any sort of hill), and got us everywhere we needed to go. We logged about 24 hours in that car.

Anyways, we hopped in our cars (suv #1- Brent, Klaudette, mark, Nate, and John... suv #2- Bri, Kelsey, Hallie, grandma Joan, and grandpa Ed... tiny jimmy- Christopher, myself, Abigail, and Brady) and drive several hours to libera, got mc Donald's for lunch, and drove the remaining 45 minutes to our resort at flamingo beach... aka playa flamingo. Driving in Costa Rica involves a lot of slow trucks, passing, and bumpy, windy roads with zero street signs. And I really mean zero. I did not see a single street sign the entire trip, and not for lack of trying or driving (remember 24 hours in the car?!). We got to the resort around 4 or so and headed straight to the pool and enjoyed the incredible sunset (happened around 5:20 each evening) before getting showered and dressed for dinner at the resort hotel. Klaudette and I shared the chicken Parmesan and the creamy sea bass fettuccine which was the clear winner of the two even though both were really awesome. That night, Abigail fell right asleep in her bed and Brady cried for maybe five or so minutes before falling asleep in his crib. It was a huge success.

Wednesday- Christmas Eve. We spent the day at the beach.  brady was initially terrified of the beach (tuesday night and the first part of wednesday) and also despised the sand (flat out refused to touch it) but got over both of those things much quicker than i'd anticipated.  like within a few hours!  it took him all summer at the pool to not hate getting wet and it took him the entire week at ocean isle and he still didn't like the sand or water.  so this was awesome.  klaudette brought a big sun canopy tent thing that provided a lot of shade and so we spent most of the time just lounging and watching the boys play football on the beach.  we hung out all day and didn't head in until the sunset.  and by head in, i mean, we went to the pool for a while before we cleaned up for dinner.  talk about perfect.  we went to an authentic costa rican restaurant for dinner that night.  and we asked the mariachi band to play us a christmas song.  they didn't know any of the religious ones we requested so we got feliz navidad instead.  ; )  they either sang eight verses of it or decided they would just stop after ten minutes.  longest feliz navidad of my life but it was great.  i ordered the fried shrimp served with rice and beans (like everything else... so much rice and beans) and it was great even though i wasn't feeling top notch.  we had ceviche as our appetizer and it was great.  i liked it best on the saltine like crackers they gave us.  and mark gave me the helpful suggestion to add a little bit of mayo to the cracker before adding the fish.  it was delish.  i was hesitant at first because i hadn't studied up on what seafood and quantities are approved during pregnancy (and we all left our phones in the states so we had no internet) so i asked what was in it and was assured it was only fish although i can't remember what kind... just a basic white fish.  well, i just googled ceviche for the first time 30 seconds ago and apparently i should have asked more specific questions as apparently i was eating completely raw fish.  whooooops.  sorry baby hillier.  i know i've eaten a few varsity chili slaw dogs on purpose, but i swear the raw fish in the ceviche was a complete accident!

Thursday- Christmas day. this was the least christmas-like dec25th i've ever had.  we didn't celebrate at all... although i think a few of us wished each other merry christmas.  ; ) We went to Buena vista for a boat ride through a nature preserve and saw birds, monkeys, crocodiles, etc.  we got there and they fed us all fruit and juice and snack stuff and then we followed a guy to the river and got on the boat.  the whole thing was way more relaxing and cooler than i thought it would be.  not sure why, but i thought we'd be in a crowded, windy, boat with no sun shade and pretty far from the shore.  it was a smallish covered river boat with just our family on it.  we had a boat driver and the tour guide that pointed everything out to us and answered all of our questions.  it was shaded from the sun and so nice and pleasant.  i was especially surprised considering how hot it was that day!  we went back to the restaurant part of the place and had lunch.  we got back to the hotel and hung out at the pool for a bit and then made and ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at the pavilion by the kelseys' room.  as i said, not a traditional christmas day or dinner.  we'd all celebrated christmas the saturday before, so it was hard for me to wrap my mind around the fact that most people were celebrating christmas on a day that felt so completely normal to me.  chris took the kids in for bed, and i stayed and played games with the fam.

Friday- it was another glorious beach day.  i spent way too much time in the sun since i could just let the kids play in the sand under the sun shade and i could play beach games or go in the waves or just lay in the sun.  i'm trying to remember where we ate that night.  maybe the italian pizza place we walked to from the resort.  i hadn't even looked at their menu and the server said "the lobster ravioli is unavailable tonight because we're out of lobster" and my heart was sad.  and it got sadder when i looked through the whole menu three times and was still wanting that lobster ravioli.  i ended up getting just a regular margherita pizza though and it was delicious.

Saturday- Adventure day!  despite a long, back and forth decision making process, we decided it would be most fun for everyone to go to the same place for adventure stuff.  we did horseback riding (abigail with me and brady with christopher), hot springs (they had cold, medium, and hot... also a sauna and mudbath), super fast water slide through the jungle (holy cow it was intense!), lunch (the spaghetti really hit the spot), and zip lining (because of my fear of heights, i stayed with brady and hallie but everyone else went and abigail LOVED it).  the whole day was just one thing and then another and each thing we did was just so much fun.  the place was beautiful and the weather was perfect.  i think we stopped for lunch at subway on the way back to the hotel and when we got there, i couldn't wait to see Steph, since she and her husband had arrived there just a few hours earlier.  woohoo!!!  the whole hillier family under one roof!

Sunday- we all woke up early and got ready for 9:00 church that was an hour away from the hotel and in some random part of town since the church building is currently being renovated.  sacrament meeting was in some vacant first floor corner of a building and it had no AC and was so super hot.  brady was sweating up a storm and john was constantly giving him drinks from his water bottle and pouring water on his head to cool him down.  the kids played with john and mark and nate for all of sacrament meeting while i daydreamed about who knows what (it was all in spanish and my spanish is pretty much non-existent).  we'd planned to stay for all three hours but because everyone was struggling so bad after just one hour of sweltering spanish sacrament meeting, we decided to head out early.  we went with the matarrita family to a nearby park for a wonderful chicken salad sandwich picnic lunch and games (soccer and kubb). after, we drove past the matarrita's old house where the hilliers first met them and then dropped them off at their current house where they've lived for the past 13 years.  we got to go inside and it was super cool to be on the inside of a real costa rican house since we'd spent hours and hours during the week driving by thousands of them and only seeing them from the outside.  i would have loved to have gotten pictures of the inside but the situation just wasn't right for that and i didn't want to be rude.  but let me tell you.  it made me simultaneously grateful and jealous.  their home was so simple that it made me appreciative that i didn't have concrete floors in my home, but i was envious of the simplicity and lack of excess and clutter.  seeing their home was one of the highlights for me of the entire trip.  once we got back to the hotel, we all changed clothes and headed out to take family pictures.  then we changed clothes again and went to the theater room at the hotel (you can reserve it) and watched when the game stands tall.  it was excellent and i highly recommend it. brady got really fussy during the beginning and then fell asleep for the last two thirds of it.  he felt feverish and you could tell he wasn't feeling too awesome.  i think that was the night that we ate at marie's and brady was a crying mess and wouldn't go to anyone except me or john.  chris hurried through eating his dinner so that he could hold brady for me, but brady just kept crying with him and eventually ran over to where john was.  john was brady's favorite person all trip and was a complete angel.  he abandoned his dinner for the third time that night and took brady walking around (it was a covered outdoor restaurant... kind of under a two story roof) until i took him again and then could hand him off to chris while i finished eating.  in short... brady was a disaster, crying inconsolably and feeling like crap.  he was relieved when it was bedtime.  ; )

Monday- we ate breakfast as usual at the hotel buffet.  totally unexpected, the matarritas surprised us at the beach!  it's a public beach across a dirt road path so they'd made the drive and got all their beach stuff all on the beach before we even finished breakfast.  but christopher and steph and my father in law had all seen them when they'd been walking on the beach earlier.  so we hung out with the matarritas at the beach all day. Brady actually napped in his crib for a few hours in the hotel room because christopher took pity on the boy and said he'd take brady in and work on emails while he slept.  so brady got a good nap until the room service lady came by to clean the room.  ; )  and i can't really remember where we ate that night or anything else about later that day.  whoops.  that's what i get for writing this two weeks late.

Tuesday- first thing that morning, we hit up the pool for a bit before breakfast and then it was checking out of the hotel and off to arenal. the day (like many others) invovled a lot of driving.  the funnest part of the day was when we showed up to the place with our cheaptickets reservation and the people had never even heard of cheap tickets, had no reservation for us, and absolutely zero vacancies.  ummm, there was no room in the inn.  there was also no room in a lot of the other inns around because we needed to stay that night which was new years eve eve.  luckily we found a place and stayed in these cute and primitive little cabins that only had minor leaks from the roof when it was raining (which was the entire time we were there) and three large beds (there was only one pack n play in the whole place so that went to bri and kelsey since hallie is only 18 months old.  we got our stuff settled and headed out for dinner at this meat place that was known for their rotisserie chicken.  we waited forever for our food.  no joke it was well over an hour... which seemed a little crazy since all the chickens were rotisserie and already done cooking when we got there (they were all on display in a big fire towards the front of the restaurant.  anyways, eventually our food came and we ate lots of chicken (along with plenty of rice and beans of course) and had the most delicious banana split (served inside of a fresh, carved out pineapple) for dessert.  i've discovered (definitely, because before i only suspected it) that fresh pineapple seriously kills the inside of my mouth and tongue... but depending on the situation, it's totally worth it and i eat it anyways.  how could i not?!  i loooove fresh pineapple!  dinner went really late because of how slow the service was, and when we got back to our cabins, the kids were exhausted (especially abigail... this happened every night, but especially when did didn't nap in the car that day) and literally we walked three feet in the door and i turned around to see where abigail was... she was already half undressed and asking me which bed she should sleep in.  i helped her get her pj's on and go potty and brush her teeth and through it all, she just kept asking me which bed she should get in.  i had her sleep in the one at the back of the cabin and she fell right asleep.  i put brady next to her (no crib, remember?) and laid next to him for 15 minutes until he also fell asleep.  there was a nightstand next to the bed and i put the kids' suitcase on the floor right there too, so i was pretty confident that if brady rolled off, he'd be just fine.  then i got in my own bed and read harry potty until honey came back from playing with mark (i can't remember what they were doing in the lobbyish part of the place.  we all slept pretty well except for the time or two that brady woke up crying.  but i laid next to him and he was able to fall back asleep.  he probably would have done that even in a crib though because he sleep cried quite a few times on the trip (on the airplane ride there, and the last couple of nights at the resort when he wasn't feeling well... and during the movie on sunday) so it really wasn't a big deal.

Wednesday- New Year's Eve. roosters semi woke me up around 5:30 or whenever and honey took off at 7 to go hike to some waterfalls with his dad and mark.  so the kids and i got ready and hung out and then went to breakfast at the hotel lobby room area.  we all had fun making fun of the weird toast, sliced deli meat ham circles, tang orange juice, neon yellow butter, runny scrambled eggs, room temperature hot chocolate, and everything else about that breakfast.  abigail actually ordered the mexican breakfast which included rice and beans, and she was pleased with her choice.  ; ) it was still raining and super cloudy so we were disappointed not to be able to see the top of the huge volcano but i liked the rainforest, jungle feel that the constant rain gave to the stay.  after breakfast we packed up our things and headed to the hot springs.  they were great and it was basically like a water park kind of with a bunch of pools and slides.  my favorite was the one like a hot bath and everyone hung out there most of the time.  we checked out the butterfly pavilion, frog pavilion, and ant farm house before we left and they were all super cool. we ate snacks in the car and grabbed Burger King when we passed through town.  honey ordered us all kids meals because they were half the price of a whooper jr and by far the best deal and man... it hit the spot.  the fries and orange soda... wonderful! then it was just even more driving to get to San Jose so we could stay at the Holiday inn by the airport.  the drivers returned the rental cars and the kids and i hung out in the hillier's hotel room watching random spanish speaking tv with mark, john, and nate.  eventually we went to the lobby and watched the grandparents and honey and john and klaudette play skip bo until it was time for dinner.  we went to Denny's because it was literally just a walk across the parking lot and because we'd all overdosed on rice and beans over the last week. i won't lie... the food kind hit the spot and we were glad to head back to an american feeling hotel for the night.  sometimes you just get a little homesick like that.  i took a marvelous shower and then headed to bed and held brady's hand (he was in a crib that slid perfectly between our bed and abigail's bed) until he fell asleep because he was still feeling under the weather.  we were all asleep by 10:30.  that's how we party on new years eve.  ; )

thursday- we got out wake up call at 4:30am and were catching the shuttle to the airport at 5:15.  yeay for early flights!  the flight wasn't horrible but i was kind of sick of our kids at that point.  brady slept in his carseat for a bit and i slept in my seat (brady by the window, then myself, then abigail... i had chris switch with the guy in front of us so that if brady kicked the seat, he was only kicking chris), but when we were all awake, i kind of just wanted to be really far away from my kids.  sorry, it's the truth.  there is such a thing as too much togetherness.  and i'd skipped my unisom and prenatal vitamins for several nights and was feeling super sick and holding a barf bag just in case i actually threw up.  so that didn't help.  but i passed the kids around as much as i could (mostly to john, and to honey's row since he was sitting with mark and nate) and we all survived.  bags and customs took a long time and then we said our sad goodbyes... especially sad to say goodbye to john who was heading to idaho the next morning.  i kind of had a mini panic attack about missing everyone and how i wasn't going to see them that night at 6:30 for dinner... it's true.  but i remembered that i always get sad and nostalgic at the end of trips and got myself pumped to just be at home with honey and the kids and get back to normal life and our spacious home (after living in a hotel for that long, it's exciting that you can be in a different room than your kids!) and a routine.  of course when we arrived in Colorado, it was snowing and had been snowing a lot.  we carried our kids and wheeled our bags to the car (i was glad i'd put on my fur boots when i'd gotten dressed that morning!) and hurried as fast as we could to get the kid's carseats installed and get the kids all buckled in the cars (since they were just wearing long sleeve shirts and pants with no heavy coats or boots.  sadly, we found out that our car battery was dead and there was only one other person around in the parking lot.  that guy was an angel though and the situation couldn't have been more perfect.  chris had just run over to him to ask if he wanted our luggage cart (the guy politely declined because he had no need for it) so he ran back over again and asked if he had cables and could jump us.  the guy actually had in his truck one of those battery pack things and just carried it over to our car.  i helped them find our battery (since i'd just experienced it dying like 5 weeks previously on my birthday when we were at the zoo and i knew where it was kind of hidden) and it took like 30 seconds until our car started.  on the way home, i couldn't help but keep gushing to christopher about how perfect that situation was  (how sucky wouuld it have been so have been freezing in the parking lot and not been able to even heat up our car?  and we would have tried to run around a deserted parking lot (wearing clothes that were not appropriate for the 21 degree weather) finding someone that had cables and time to jump our car.  and it's not like any of us had cell phones so we couldn't just call the hilliers and have them drive over to where we were to give us a jump.  it was seriously such a blessing.  so i told honey that that solidified it for me and i was going to use some of my birthday/christmas money to buy one of those battery pack things so that i wouldn't be caught in a bad spot (what if it was dark and i was alone with my kids and there was no one around?!) if my battery died.  and that way, if i was ever in a position to help someone that needed a jump, i could be that angel for them.  so i need to do some amazon research, but i'm really really excited about this.  i mean, we've had to borrow cables (and sometimes a jump) from people FOUR TIMES in the last year.

anyways... it snowed the whole way home and a lot more in the two days that followed.  happily, costa rica was one of those super fun busy family trips that was enjoyable at the time, but also enjoyable to come back from.  i'm so grateful for the opportunity to have gone.  and abigail keeps talking about next time we go.  ha... someday...

20 weeks

How far along:  20 weeks  (1.15.15)
Total weight gain/loss: 8.5 lbs
Maternity clothes:  yes, but still just the the maternity shirts that i feel comfortable wearing when i'm not pregnant.  my belly is definitely big, but there are still a few shirts that i'm not quite bit enough for yet.  i haven't needed any maternity pants or anything.  i bought a bella band at old navy this week because it was half off and only $8.50.  i used one all the time during my first pregnancy (borrowed along with other maternity clothes) but gave it back and didn't have/use one at all during my pregnancy with brady.  i think it'll be nice to have, especially at the end of pregnancy to give length to shirts when i need it.
Sleep:  not great and not terrible.  it's been hit and miss, especially since i've been experiencing some congestion the last few nights and the last two nights have been a crazy painful stabbing sore throat.  but only between 7 and 7 so luckily the days are fine, but it has made for a couple rough nights.  the best part of sleep the past few weeks though has been that my dreams haven't been out of control.
Best moment this week:  monday morning!  finding out that we're having a girl!!!
Movement:  just the same as it has been.  lots of kicks and strong flips and rolls down low with a preference for this girl lodging herself on my right side.  i feel virtually nothing around my belly button and the ultrasound tech confirmed that that's exactly where my anterior placenta is.  i'm kind of glad for this anterior placenta because, as i think i've mentioned before, the flips and rolls i feel down low are already painful and really uncomfortable and have been for weeks, since the beginning of when i started feeling them.  so crazy.
Food cravings:  i wont lie... i'm pretty good at eating these days.  i've still been feeling sick at least 50% of the evenings lately but it hasn't been horrific.  but i'm feeling great during the days and eating whatever i feel like.  i'm still kind of picky but it's not a problem.  lately, i've been loving scrambled cheese eggs on toast/biscuits, greek yogurt with blackberries and honey, and ummm steak.  medium rare please.  we went to outback on friday night and i was in love with my steak.  i could probably eat a medium rare steak every day if that was an option.  so delish.  i also really loved the chicken parmesan with bowtie pasta that my mil fed the kids and i for lunch monday after my ultrasound.  i just told honey we need to go to outback again on saturday... i was going to suggest tomorrow night but we're going to the temple.  k, the countdown begins... 48 hours until my next glorious steak.
Symptoms: nausea, backache (i can tell i have a backache that is separate from the regular sharp back pains i've been experiencing the last two months), intense sense of smell.  shout out to weird dreams, headaches, etc that are semi normal and semi pregnancy related.
Gender:  my guess was right!  we're having a girl!!!  we knew it and we're thrilled!  i may have gone shopping at old navy the very next day and picked up a few things.  ; )  other amazing news?  liza is also having a girl!  this is more perfect than what i have time to put into words right now.
What I miss:  nothing.  i'm so content... i love being pregnant.
Milestones:  i had several friends at church notice my pregnancy.  shannon and kelsey kept commenting on how could they not know.  i think most people at church just found out this past sunday or the one before unless they were one of the few people i'd talked to about it.  when we found out on monday, we posted on facebook that we were expecting a girl this spring.  woohoo!  now it's really public information!
Theme: the week of being sure it's a girl!  i've been calling this babe a "she" for weeks, but now it's nice to really know for sure.
What's different this time around: i'm not entirely sure.  i think this is the part of pregnancy where i'd say things are the most similar across the board.
Extra:  i'm really really loving my pregnant belly.  i like being skinny, but there is something so insanely fun about having a belly.  i hate getting dressed (this has been true my whole life) and picking out what to wear.  but i have been experiencing extra motivation in the mornings lately at the thought of putting on a form fitting, belly flattering shirt.  ; )

and then i retook them because i remembered what christopher said several weeks earlier about how cardigans weren't great for my weekly belly shots...

Brady at story time

Abigail is at preschool so we're just partying at the library. It's great.

Today

Today, I finally turned in all of Abigail's kindergarten registration stuff.

I organized my jewelry that has been a complete disaster since the beginning of time.

I also replanted (same pot) this flower Abigail gave me for Christmas. It has been growing like crazy ever since we got home from Costa Rica. But it has thrusted itself out of the soil in the process.

After rest time but while Brady was still sleeping, Abigail and I read the friend magazine and made a little fruit parfait. With just blackberries... Because it's winter and we're limited.

We even followed the recipe.

It was so delicious. I may have added a little honey on top just because it was Greek yogurt and super low sugar. Abigail couldn't believe that this was a grow food and a treat.

And all of the sudden I got super sleepy.

Checking out now and hoping that the horrific sore throat that kept me up last night will cut me some slack.

Yesterday I had to wake Abigail up for preschool. She really likes her sleep, so I tried to be extra gentle and patient with her to avoid her crying spells that typically accompany her exhaustion.

Watching her was like fast forwarding 10 years into the future.

She did the slow roll to get her feet on the floor.

She stood, dismayed at the day.

She attempted to open her eyes to see if it was really actually daytime already.

And then she dropped to the ground and snuggled the strategically placed pillow that is always carefully put down on the floor each night in case she falls out of bed.

Sometimes, waking up is hard to do.

two big sisters

last night, honey had a super bad headache so i put the kids to bed by myself.  as i was tucking abigail in bed, she excitedly told me "mom! there's going to be two big sisters!" and i was all "what do you mean?" wondering if she was considering the two to be her and myself.

"well me and this baby girl when she grows up!  we're both going to be big sisters!"

and while i knew that was most likely correct, all i could think to say was "yes... but it could be a boy."  i've been doing this in my own head for the last two days too, getting myself prepped for whatever news came our way.

well, it wasn't necessary.

there's going to be two big sisters.  ; )

abigail and i were both pretty confident and hopeful that it would be a girl.  and even in the ultrasound when the tech got to that part she asked us what we thought.  i said "well i've thought it's a girl the whole time" and she asked christopher what he thought and he said "well, actually we've both been guessing it's a girl."

but don't get me wrong that i would have been at all disappointed with a boy, because there would have been many conveniences in having two boys in a row (like how i could just keep out all of those baby clothes of brady's that i still haven't packed up and taken to the basement...) and it would be so fun to see brady play with a little baby brother.  but here are a few of my thoughts about this being a girl.

first, i've had my guess from the beginning that this was a girl because i've been super sick like i was with abigail.  i know they say it's a wives tale that you're more sick with girls, but just based off of my two previous pregnancies where with abigail i was sick from day one and vomiting til 15 weeks and with brady i got sick around six weeks and it faded by 12 weeks and never even was bad enough to make me throw up... well, this pregnancy has been far far far more like abigail's than brady's.  i felt sick even before i got a positive pregnancy test, spent over a month in bed, and threw up as late as 16 weeks, with some close calls even at 18 weeks.

second, from the beginning, abigail has wanted this baby to be a girl.  it makes sense though.  i already have a boy and a girl... but abigail only has a boy.  since she only has a brother, she's been really really wanting a little sister.

third, abigail was a summer baby and brady was a winter baby.  so it's convenient to have another girl summer baby.  technically she'll be born in spring... but she'll be in all those baby clothes during the hot summer months so we're good.

fourth, boy names are impossible so it's a relief not to have to come up with a boy name this time around.

So here's one big sister.

And here's the other big sister.

Two big sisters.

Late night

It's 11pm and I'm still awake. I can't fall asleep despite laying here for two hours. Five minutes ago, it finally occurred to me. I never took my vitamins or unisom tonight. And I'm pretty sure 11 o'clock is too late to pop a sleeping pill. Sigh.

In other, happier, news... We find out Monday morning if this little babe is a boy or a girl. I've got my guess... Anyone care to venture one of their own?

And I just need to also add that one of my very favorite things about being pregnant (this time and the two previous times) is laying in bed at night and being soothes to sleep by little baby rolls and kicks and punches. It is hours and hours of entertainment for me. Life is good.

Brady's book picks

We're at the library right now for story time. We sat next to the shelf of board books so , naturally, Brady keeps bring me books he'd like me to read to him.

These are his top two picks.

He seems to not care that he doesn't fit into either author's intended audience.

19 weeks

How far along:  19 weeks  (1.8.15)

Total weight gain/loss: 7 lbs
Maternity clothes:  maternity shirts are definitely more flattering to my belly, but i'm happy to wear regular shirts too as long as they're long enough.  it's so easy right now to dress the bump, but holy cow do i dread trying to find something to wear on sundays.  this would be easier if it was summer and i could just throw on a different maxi skirt every week.
Sleep:  my dreams really haven't been that bad lately.  i'm still taking my unisom each night and i love how it knocks me out.  the other day i took it right before we put the kids to bed.  then i was reading my book in bed and literally could not keep my eyes open.  it was 8:30 on the dot.  ; )  last night i woke up around 3 for no apparent reason.  i went to the bathroom just because and then it took me a bit to fall back asleep.  not at all bad though.  i try to fall asleep on my side but i know i move around a ton while i sleep and spend a good amount of time on my belly (with one leg up to prop up my belly a bit) and i always, without fail, wake up on my back each morning.  i think i sleep on my back for the last hour or two and always have memories of feeling my baby kick.  it's a mostly sleepy, but somewhat awake dreamy sort of state where i'm aware of the sun rising and that i'm on my back and i have my hands on my belly to feel by baby.  i really love it.  also, i've been waking up around 7:30 lately but some mornings as late as 8:30.  i always wake up feeling well rested and excited for a new day.  hallelujah for this!  i'm positive this is the most sleep i've ever gotten on a regular basis, especially at such regular and consistent hours.  even as an eight year old, i stayed up later than this and got less hours.  but this whole getting at least 10-12 hours of sleep and waking up naturally and well rested at 7:30am?  a 100% new concept for me... i never thought this was actually attainable by a real person.
Best moment this week:  i can't say that there's been one moment or thing in particular, but it's been a good week.
Movement:  i'm loving it.  even though so much of what i feel is terribly uncomfortable...  it's the same as last week.
Food cravings:  i have probably eaten several pounds of sugar this week.  it's not that i crave it so much as i just think about it and it's already there at my fingertips.  i finished off the box of see's chocolates, finished the box of enstrom's toffee, and start to finish downed the box of my mom's chocolates... which i felt really bad about last night when honey asked where they were and looked so heartbroken when i gave him the look that they were gone.  he was incredulous.  "how did you already finish them?!  it was nearly full two days ago!!!"  i still feel bad.  anyways, food is starting to sound super amazing to me, but when i think about it, i just want it right that second... not in an hour or two.  we went out to texas roadhouse on friday night with my mother in law and nate and mark and my steak was to die for.  so was the corn and honey's potato soup that i ate all of and even mark's salad that i finished off for him.  we went out monday afternoon to chili's (we met honey to go to the visa place for pictures and paperwork and stuff and thought we'd grab a little lunch with a giftcard) and i got a chicken alfredo pasta that was wonderfully creamy.  they messed up and added cajun seasoning when i'd asked them to leave it off but i ate as much as i could handle anyways (mostly the outside and underneath noodles with no spicyness on them) but the server was so apologetic about it and offered to bring me something else.  i asked for a small salad (salads have sounded sooo appealing lately (but only with crunch lettuce... not spinach salads like i normally prefer) and it was great.  and she ended up not charging us at all for my pasta so that was a pleasant surprise.  and that night, honey and i went out for a VIP night at a bad daddy's (burger restaurant chain his clients are doing) opening in aurora and i chose a create your own burger.  it was great.  i did a regular burger and bun with white cheddar, pineapple, and bacon... with lettuce and tomato and a special sauce.  the sweet potato fries were good but didn't taste a whole lot like sweet potato.  the snickers shake sample they brought was good but i didn't like the chunks of peanuts.  the strawberry lemonade was great.  but the very weirdest part of the whole night was that i was craving wings so we chose that for our appetizer.  and i ate two of them and loved it even though they were so spicy, my lips were about to burn off (i have zero tolerance for spicy).  there was just something about the tender, saucy chicken with crispy skin and cool and creamy dressing...  it wasn't necessarily a pregnancy craving (i would have survived just fine without wings), but it's definitely something i wouldn't have eaten had i not been pregnant.  there's only one place i've ever loved wings and it was this restaurant we went to a few times when honey was selling alarms in pittsburgh.  at no other time have i really desired wings.  anyways...that was a lot of eating out for us (it was all free with giftcards and VIP credit otherwise we wouldn't have) in a short amount of time, especially considering we'd just gotten back from costa rica where almost all of our meals were eaten out, but it's nice not to cook or clean up and even nicer to see a whole slew of options, pick one, and be able to eat it within ten minutes.  y'know what's been absolutely amazing lately?!  eggs on toast.  that is hands down, the most delicious part of my day.  every day.  i think about food and eating all the time and i know it's only going to get worse.  also, my body doesn't ever feel full for satisfied.  i just have to tell myself to stop my meals after a normal amount of food because i know seconds or thirds isn't going to help at all.  i'm not necessarily hungry all the time... my body just feels like it needs to be eating all the time.  as i've been writing this post, i've been eating costco sugared mangos and baby carrots with hummus.
Symptoms: occasional nausea, occasional headaches
Gender:  i'm going to be floored if this is a boy.  i'm excited at the possibility of getting to dress up a little girl (since abigail has major clothing preferences and chooses most of her outfits) again, but having a boy would be so wonderfully convenient and so fun for brady so i'm kind of torn.  it'll be a win either way.
What I miss:  being able to stand up straight in the morning and being able to bend over and/or pick up my kids without trouble.  this doesn't have anything to do with pregnancy (i think it's an inflamed disc in my back or something?) but i definitely miss it.  it's been going on for almost two months... holy cow.  in my head during the day, i feel like i'm bending over weird because i'm pregnant and have a big belly, but then i have to remind myself that it's actually just because i'm in so much pain and soon enough things are going to get really tricky with my mobility...
Milestones:  the last week of not knowing what we'll be having!  hopefully...  ; )
Theme: the week of constantly stuffing my face with chocolate and sugar
What's different this time around:  i still get morning sickness if i'm not careful.  so i'm being super careful about taking my vitamins and unisom/b6 every night.
Extra:  i'm trying to work through the clutter and mess that has built up the past several months and it's kind of overwhelming.  there are piles of misc papers, toys, etc, in my bedroom, bathroom, closet, kitchen island, laundry room, etc.  everywhere i look, there's crap!  and now i'm trying to undo months of neglect.  yesterday i cleaned out my car (it's never been that disgusting ever ever ever) and did a few loads of laundry.  i felt accomplished except that i looked around and realized how i'm just barely scratching the surface.  sigh.  so i'm trying to press forward while i'm feeling good!

Sorry again for the lack of blogging

I was in Costa Rica.

It is not even funny how behind I am on blogging. Here's stuff I need to catch up on...

Brady's birthday! And Brady's two year post. And our Christmas celebrations. And ten days of Costa Rica with the Hilliers. And pregnancy stuff (umm, I'm 18 weeks today and it is flying by).  Just to name a few.

We could also toss in Hawaii from a year ago, and actually probably 90% of the trips I've been on since getting married. Ugh, I'm so crappy about documenting trips. I never even posted photos from our three weeks backpacking Eastern Europe in 2008. Major fail.

Let's go ahead and make that one of my 2015 goals... Catch up (as much as possible) on documenting trips. Wish me luck with that one.

18 weeks

How far along:  18 weeks  (1.1.15)

Total weight gain/loss: +6.5 lbs... add an extra 5 if i weigh at night.  ; )
Maternity clothes:  my maternity shirts, for the most part, are more flattering than regular clothes.  they accentuate my belly without making it look like a gut.  still doing fine with my pants.  as far as church clothes go, i can still fit into everything, but almost nothing looks good.  i just look weird and fat.
Sleep:  it's been better i think.  maybe because i've been so tired after busy days in costa rica?  my dreams are still ultra bizarre but are never pregnancy related.
Best moment this week:  probably just being in costa rica with everyone.  i was enjoying the company and my kids and just being pregnant.
Movement:  just loving it.  baby likes to sit low and on my right side.  that's almost always where i can feel the knots.  i'm feeling lots of thumps on the inside but the kicks aren't powerful enough to feel on the outside really... but it's really easy to feel baby's back or head or whatever when it's pushing out or situated like that.
Food cravings:  eating has been weird since we've been traveling.  it's been really great not having to think about preparing food or cleaning up dirty dishes and whatever, but sometimes it's just hard to eat other people's food.  i love scrambled eggs, but it's always a struggle for me to eat them when they're prepared by someone other than myself and especially the way they were prepared in costa rica.  chunky but slightly runny and if it had cheese, it was chunks of partially melted cheese mixed in.  and not cheddar... the colby jack sort of stuff that melted differently.  we did the hotel breakfast buffet every morning that we were at playa flamingo and i normally had scrambled eggs, fruit (the papaya wasn't my favorite, but i normally ate whatever watermelon, pineapple, and canteloupe they had available), an order of pancakes (loaded with butter and syrup), juice (normally starfruit), and a bowl of frosted flakes (or corn flakes if that was all they had).  i ate a ton at breakfast because i was normally feeling my best, and we typically went light on lunch and heavy on dinner so i needed something to really sustain me.  oddly enough though, i never felt full... i would just keep eating for however long i could find options of acceptable things for myself to eat.  dinners were whatever i could handle from our menus.  authentic places we ate at, i normally ordered shrimp or fish (which always comes with rice and beans) and other places, it was always just whatever i thought i could handle... pasta, burger, pizza, etc.  pregnancy makes me a picky eater (at this point at least) because i can look at something and be all "oooo shrimp pasta with a super creamy sauce!!!  oh, served on spaghetti noodles?  i could handle penne, fetuccinne, angel hair, etc, but just not spaghetti noodles.  i'll order a cheeseburger instead."  one place we ate family style of rotissere chicken that was served with tortillas and rice and beans, etc.  i can't handle corn tortillas... so i ended up just mixing it all on my plate and eating it with a fork.  the good news of it all was that i was really able to increase my eating this week, maintain a well balanced diet, and put on a few pounds.  also, apparently my morning sickness is still very much alive and well... i found that out when i ditched my vitamins/medicine for three days and was fearfully clutching a barf bag more often than i would have liked...
Symptoms: nausea (although not much if i keep taking unisom/b6), headaches (only sometimes), big belly (all the time)
Gender:  my gut still says girl.  i can't help calling this baby "she" and if that's truly the case, we might already have her name picked out.
What I miss:  nothing really.  i'm in that pregnancy sweet spot for the most part.  i still kind of wish i was skinny again or that i was a little bit bigger so i didn't look so awkward, but really, i'm absolutely loving where i'm at.  oh wait, just kidding.  i miss being able to go in hot tubs.  we went to two different hot springs locations while we were in costa rica and i couldn't go in the truly hot pools.  had to stay in the ones that were more bath tub temperature.  that was hard on me.
Milestones:  it's starting to click in my head that we're going to have three kids.  i'm trying not to panic.  ; )
Theme: the week of pregnant in costa rica
What's different this time around:  i'm still having to take unisom and b6 or else i feel sick.  both previous pregnancies, i was done with morning sickness at this point.
Extra:  honey's sister, steph, is pregnant with her first and due exactly a week after i am.  she's not showing.  at all.  when we were hanging out with the matarittas on sunday, the mom looked at our bellies in awe as she tried to make her brain realize that we were due a week apart.  her eyes got all big and she said [in spanish], you're going to have a BIG baby!!!  steph just started laughing and relayed the message to me.  ha, yup, i know i'm huge for how far along i am.  thank you for that.  ; )
